I was diagnosed with RA about 4 years ago . I have mtx injection 20 mg and Plaquinel . I never had throat problems till the last few weeks. A month ago i had a really painful throat it cleared up but its back again. Not like a sore throat with a cold more like a painful throat. Decided to miss my injection this week to see if that will help. I've never missed it before so i am quite worried . Due for blood tests on Thurs. Iwill see what the nurse says if it has'nt cleared. Hi Carol - I have this a lot too. I have SS and RA. I get a particular sore throat that seems to come and go over about 3 weeks till I give in and get antibiotics.

It is a 'high up' sore throat that always includes the very back of the roof of my mouth as well as the ear and glands on one side. It's different to the tonsilitis throats I used to get before my immune system went into overdrive.

Sorry got no answers Carol, but at least I can empathise. Difflam spray helps a little XX Ailsa

Hi Carol, yes, I have those problems too, just lately the roof of my mouth feels sore and as if there is something stuck to it. Gross!!! Havent actually told doctor or anyone so far. Have an appt at rheumy on 22nd Oct, and then an appt with the oral dept of the Sjogren's clinic on 17th Nov. Also so many mouth ulcers, at the moment my bottom lip has a huge one, and inside top lip is almost as bad. Always have a few small ones, put that down the to mtx, but its definitely worse. I hope you can get to the bottom of it, will keep checking in to see how you get on, take care xSad

Difflam spray (benzydamine)

Main use Active ingredient Manufacturer
Inflammation in the mouth and throat Benzydamine hydrochloride Meda Pharmaceuticals

How does it work?
Difflam spray contains the active ingredient benzydamine hydrochloride, which is a type of medicine called a non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug (NSAID). Benzydamine hydrochloride is a painkilling medicine used to relieve mild to moderate pain and inflammation in a particular area. It is most effective if applied directly to the area affected.

Benzydamine works by preventing the formation of prostaglandins.

Prostaglandins are produced in response to injury and certain diseases and conditions, and cause pain, swelling and inflammation. Benzydamine blocks the production of these prostaglandins and is therefore effective at reducing inflammation and pain.

Benzydamine also acts as a local anaesthetic, causing numbness and so pain relief at the site of application.

Difflam spray is sprayed directly into the mouth or throat to relieve pain and inflammation.

I get it in Boots or Superdrug - if you like pernod, you won't mind this. Hope it works for you too XX Ailsa

thanks for yor replies

it must be to do with RA etc

mine is painful not sore and goes thru neck/ears and like you roof of my mouth is also sore--the doc i saw this time says the pain is due to very swollen glands in throst and neck
